Physics Paper 3

1.

QUESTION ONE

You are provided with the following

- One metre rule.

- A set of masses

- A piece of thread

- A stop watch

- A G- clamp (ordinary laboratory clamp)

. a) Set up the apparatus as shown in the figure below

b) Hang a mass of 20g on the thread (ensure the thread and the mass are firmly tied to the metre rule). Displace the mass slightly downwards to set the rule and the mass into oscillation.

c) Measure the time for 10 oscillations of the rule and record the value in the table.

d) Repeat (c) for masses of 40g, 60g, 80g, 100g and 120g.

e) Calculate the period of oscillation for each mass and record in the table.

f) Plot the graph of T2 against m(kg)

g) Given that the equation of the graph is T2 =Pm+Q where P and Q are constants, determine

i) The value of P.

2.

You are provided with the following:

- A measuring cylinder of 50ml.

- A test tube (pyrex material).

- A 250ml beaker.

- Water in a beaker.

- Six 1g ball bearings.

- Sand. -

A Vernier caliper

- Half metre rule. - Labels Procedure

a) i) Measure the internal diameter of the measuring cylinder using a Vernier calipers D= ………………………………………………………………………………cm

(1mk) ii) Calculate the area of cross section of the inner part of the cylinder.

A = …………………………………………………………………………….. (1mk)

b) i) Pour water into a measuring cylinder up to about 50ml mark. Mark this point h1 using the label.

ii) Place the test tube upright inside the measuring cylinder so that it floats upright. (You may add some sand). Measure the increase in height h of the water level from h1.

Record this value in the table.

Insert one ball bearing into the test tube then place the test tube back into the cylinder gently. Measure the increase in height from h1.

c) Repeat the procedure in (b) above by adding ball bearings one by one each time measuring the new change in height (h) from h1

enter the results in the table below.

d) Plot a graph of mass m on the y axis against change in (h) on x- axis.
